Lincoln County

Lincoln County, North Carolina

Lincoln County was formed in 1779 when Tryon County was divided into Lincoln and Rutherford Counties. It was named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, a Continental Army officer during the American Revolution. Lincolnton, the county seat, was incorporated in 1785.

The Battle of Ramsour’s Mill, fought near present-day Lincolnton on June 20, 1780, was an important Revolutionary War engagement between local Patriot and Loyalist forces. During the early nineteenth century, Lincoln County became a center for iron production and textile manufacturing. Its original territory was much larger, but portions were used to form Cleveland County in 1841, Catawba County in 1842, and Gaston County in 1846.
